Samsung UN40D6420UFXZA LED 3D HDTV Set, Bringing The World to Your Home

By Carlton T Driver

Samsung has been a leader in the development of flat panel HDTV sets; it is one of the top brands available. Their newest sets feature LED back-lighting technology, replacing the cold-cathode fluorescent tube systems that were used by the first generation of LCD TV sets. The use of this LED technology has enabled them to produce sets that are thinner, and lighter than earlier sets, yet produce substantially better picture quality. The Samsung UN40D6420UFXZA LED 3D HDTV is a good example of this technical excellence.

Since a Liquid crystal display can not give off any kind of illumination, but instead functions as a shutter which adjusts the passage of LED light out of the screen, any LCD display requires a back-light in order to be visible in poor illumination situations. The Liquid crystal part of the display basically functions like a "shutter" that either permits light to transmit out of the display panel, or blocks it.

While an LCD display can be seen in bright light (for example, a digital watch or clock face), in order to be seen in dim lighting conditions there must be a light source behind the LCD display screen that provides illumination, in other words, a back-lighting system. The first LCD TV sets were back-lit by a fluorescent tubes, which provide white light. Each picture element or"pixel", that is used to create a TV picture is small spot in the display that contains three microscopic filters that provide the primary TV colors: red, green, and blue (the familiar RGB you've seen in TV specs).

A color TV image is created by regulating the amount of visibility for every LCD point that regulates the light passing through every one of the color filters, in every one of the pixels that create the entire picture. To get an HDTV picture, there are 1,080 scan lines of pixels, every one of which has 1920 pixels - a total of over 2,000,000 pixels that produce each picture, or frame of a TV broadcast. Each of these three "screens" is controlled independently to control the color that produces each pixel, for each frame of the TV frame. The image for an HDTV screen is renewed at a rate of either 120 Hz, or 240 Hz (120 to 240 times per sec.) depending upon the version.

Samsung's UN40D6420UFXZA LED 3D HDTV set employs what is called an "edge lighting" system to back-light its TV picture. This system uses very bright LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) that produce an intense white light and are placed around the edges of the screen. This edge lighting is then distributed across the entire face of the display by a diffuser plate. Using an LED system means that the TV uses much less energy to operate than other types of TV set. This set is incredibly efficient: if it is used for five hours per day, assuming an electricity rate of $0.11 per Kwh, a years operation would cost about $14. When the set is off, it uses just 0.07 watts. That adds up to 0.6 Kwh/yr, which would cost as little as $0.07 ,assuming the same electric rates!

Among all the other great Specifications, this UN40D6420UFXZA Samsung set is loaded with something that Samsung refers to as "Smart Apps" - apps which are the actual foundation of their "Smart TV" system. All these "Apps" permit you to use the Television set to interact with the Internet, and download content from the Web from providers like Hulu Plus, Netflix, Pandora, and many others.

This set also uses "Allshare DLNA Technology". The acronym DLNA stands for "Digital Living Network Alliance". It is an "interoperability protocol" that makes it easy for different electronic devices to link up to share files and data. Samsung's "Allshare" makes it possible to synch your other DLNA-enabled devices with your Samsung TV set, so you can run the media files on your iPhone, computer, and your other devices on your HDTV set. If you add an optional LinkStick, you can also have wireless access as well.

Also included with the Samsung UN40D6420UFXZA is a feature called ConnectShare Movies. This allows you to play music, watch videos, or display pictures from a USB Flash Drive. All you need to do is plug the drive into the set's USB port.

The clarity of the picture you will see on the Samsung UN40D6420UFXZA is enhanced by the Ultra Clear Panel which forms the front of the screen. This panel absorbs ambient light from the surroundings, which in turn almost totally eliminates the annoying reflections that would otherwise appear on the screen. This in turn provides a picture with deeper blacks and enhanced contrast, providing a cleaner, crisper image with great shadow detail.

Owning this set will significantly enhance your TV watching experience, as well as making it easy to interface with all your other media needs, including your computer, your other personal devices, and the Internet.Check out all the details about the Samsung UN40D6420UFXZA 3D LED HDTV by following the link in the Resource Box, and see how well this set will work for you.
