Do Your Research Before Buying - 2 GB Netbook Critique

By Samuel Miller

Also scrolling with page up/page down while reading a long web page is a pain when you have to press also the FN key! With most netbooks you have to live with the FN key, not in this case, the NB505 keyboard is really practical and comfortable, almost like a full laptop or pc keyboard, even do the position of the keys is not standard, they let you do the work easier and faster.

Unlike others who have noted sticky keys, I have had no problems at all with the keyboard. The touchpad is a bit oversensitive, but overall it is not too bad and I don't get annoyed when I use it.

I finally decided on a 10" notebook. After reading all the reviews and debating if I needed an air card. Remember to never stop learning new things. This product is excellent, battery is very long durations, and the other preference for this mini laptop is incredible, price is good, thanks. The built-in webcam is OK; good for Skype and the like but not exceptional. The built-in speaker(s) are pretty quiet and the sound is not great (though I wasn't really expecting it to be and with my really nice headphones, it sounds great).

I can't think of any complaints. It's not a laptop, it's a netbook. They give you 3 USB ports, as well as sound and mic ports; the sound is excellent through my Apple earbuds. I can't believe some of you complained about this unit only having one speaker; if it had two it would NOT sound that much better. The first was for my wife, this one is for me, to replace a three year old netbook. Installation was much faster on this one, and I have activated two fingered scrolling on the touchpad. The touchpad seems a little crowded at the bottom of the device, so I found myself accidentally clicking while typing--but again, over use, this became less and less of a problem. You just have to be ready to adapt to the netbook's size, which Toshiba makes extremely easy. I'd buy it again if I had the chance. I had very much been wanting a netbook for some time so when my laptop's hard drive failed, I bought this at the local CompUSA.

The first thing I did after receiving it was install the Ubuntu 11.10 operating system in the place of the Windows 7 starter edition. The netbook runs much smoother with the Ubuntu system.

The netbook is being advertised as having DDR2 memory (typically 667 MHz, with a max of 800 MHz memory speed), but when I received the netbook, it came with DDR3 memory. This is actually a good thing, since DDR3 memory typically comes at a speed of 1066 MHz That meant that the windows MAGNIFIER program would not display full screen (only docked). I can get it working, I had my fingers crossed. The Asus netbooks come with DDR3 (upgradable) memory (just like my Toshiba), and both netbooks also have user-selectable economy modes and non-glossy covers. Considering that Windows in a resource hog, I decided on the Toshiba since it comes with the 6-cell which also helps tilt the back of the netbook slightly upward for easier typing and better cooling. I have had it for three weeks and it's everything I expected and wanted. I am typing on it right now!
