Does A Fantastic Job - Industrial Dehydrator Critique

By Gabriel Taylor

With all the problems with dog foods and dog treats we were so worried about what to give our dog! No longer an all-day process it's quick and easy from start to clean-up! On Monday of this week it was "in Chicago" and I should receive it in the next day or so. I live 3 hours from the farthest part of Chicago and as of Thursday I have not received the replacement. For a summer treat, dehydrate your fruit leather until it's kind of puffy and slimy. Then freeze it and you have a good treat for ice cream or by itself! I've made fruit leather, zucchini chips, dried bananas and apples, and I'm going to make jerky this weekend. Drying times vary a lot depending on where you are, so I decided it was unnecessary for me to buy a unit with a timer.

Don't worry, this is one of those times you get so much more than you pay for. Especially if you are like me and new to dehydrating, it's a great place to start. This is my first dehydrator and I love it. It gets the job done quietly and I've found my actual drying times are much less than what recipes call for. After about 8 hours most were done and after 12 all were complete. The thin fruit leather from puree was the big hit better than the commercial version, and the fruit was all eaten the next day at the lake.

I made both of those recipes - it worked out to the T! If you want to have a handy, sturdy food dehydrator this one is for you, affordable and it does the job.

The thermostat is a great feature with which you can dial up any temperature you want. Also, having the heating element, fan on the top makes clean up a breeze. I buy the meats in bulk when they go on sale. I also bought the jerky gun. The book does not provide very much detail on blanching vegetables, which is necessary to destroy enzymes in the tissues and also enhances the destruction of harmful bacteria. Different vegetables have different blanching times and over or under blanching may have an undesirable result as far as loss of color and flavor during drying or storage. I haven't tried any of the recipes in the book yet but I plan to try some of their fruit roll and dog treat ones. The jerky seasonings provided were pretty good but I added some of my own seasonings to it for my personal liking.

This dehydrator does everything I would like a dehydrator to do. It's versatile and provides very even heating throughout all levels. Purchased this a few weeks ago and dehydrated everything in sight. I did peaches (very good), cantaloupes (different), and lots of ripe local tomatoes.

After doing some research, turns out most banana chips you buy are fried! Also, my cranberries were crunchy, not to mention very tart, very unlike the leathery like the ones I buy.
