Happy I Bought This Item - Personal Finance Software Program Critique

By Samuel Lewis

A common thread through many of these reviews seems to be along the lines of: "I've tried Microsoft Money and Quicken, and they were good at tracking, but not at really budgeting. Then I tried YNAB, and I've never been happier".

With this system, you may want to take certain categories and apply some additional to them each month beyond what you would normally spend. For example, the 'Transportation: Tires and Repair' category.

Then, after watching some YouTube videos on YNAB, I decided to give it a try. It's excellent!

Now with ATMs, you lose track, spend more than you make, you just loose track quickly of where your money isn't going. What YNAB does is take you back to the tried and true method. He does have an online budget tool you can subscribe to, but I don't want to manage my personal information online. We have been looking for software to make Ramsey's manual forms easier while still maintaining the frequent interaction required to really manage a budget. I know, because I used to think that way. Knowing what your day to day expenses are is not the same as actively planning for your future and having control over your money. Knowing that I have all my expenses completely paid for the next 30 days is a fantastic feeling. While other employees at my office are rushing to the bank immediately after getting their checks, I can relax and deposit it the next week if I want to. All of my accounts get automatically downloaded to Quicken, a feature not available in YNAB. All in all, I just found that YNAB requires way too much manual entry. Most banks/cards support QFX. This is a HUGE timesaver compared to manually entering 100% of your transactions, particularly for anyone who is used to tracking things manually in a spreadsheet.

It's a great budgeting program. The good thing about the software application is not only the software, but the 10 day course that comes with it.

You cannot use this software to balance your checkbook, but it will balance your budget. One of the best features of this software is that it will allow you to apply money to a specific category each month, and let that category grow. In a truly frightening kind of "I spend that much money on THAT!" You can see the impact of your daily coffee habit on your car insurance payment 6 months away.

I have recommended it to friends, family and co-workers and only wish I could give it more than 5 stars. Give it a try, you will not be disappointed. Within the budget section, you can get to some level of detail, but just in a small pop-up window. If you want to look at all your entertainment expenses to try to analyze what you might cut down on, there's no good way to examine those details, or to look for categorized transactions if you have a large volume of data. At the end of the month I expect to have an additional $500 left over, ear marked for a slush fund, and paying for medicines and such. Also, I set aside mad money for my wife to use on herself, not me, or clothes, hygiene, just on stuff of $150.
